Seasonal Wardrobe Transitioning: Summer to Fall

Well August 1st really snuck right up, didn't it? I feel like I was just planning for a beach weekend, hunting for the perfect summer sandals and blasting the A/C (oh wait... still doing that last one).

Part of me wants to pump the breaks on summer, but the other half of me is ready for hot coffee drinks, cool weather and colorful foliage.

The start of August triggers a mental shift for me as we inch closer to fall. But South Carolina and Georgia natives know that just because August has rolled in, the summer heat wave isn't over yet.

One of the questions I get asked the most when working on a Closet Edit is, "How can I get the most wear out of this _________?" You fill in the blank. Dress. Top. Pair of Jeans.

Simple. Season-proofing your wardrobe.

Now, I don't expect this to be done with every item hanging in your closet, but to make the most of the pieces you buy, you should be able to mix and match throughout the year to create seasonal looks.

As we move from season to season, I'll be publishing new blog posts on seasonal wardrobe transitioning and how to pull it off with pieces you might already have in your closet.

To start things off, here are a few tips to help you move from summer to fall outfitting effortlessly:

First up, layering with a jean jacket. Hands down, one of the most worn pieces in my wardrobe is my jean jacket. I wear it a solid 3-4 times a week starting in August. The beauty of a jean jacket lies in its versatility.

Do you have classic or traditional style? This jacket is a personal favorite and this jacket has gotten great reviews. Feminine?  This jacket and this jacket are perfect. Is creative or bold style more your thing? This jacket and this jacket are fun options! Use the weight of the jacket to balance an otherwise summery look.

Seasonal shoes are another way to bring your summer favorites into fall. Switch out the sandal or strappy heel and opt for loafers, flats, mules, booties and slip ons in soft suede or supple leather.

Layer your jean jacket over a sundress and pair with a light-colored block heel mule.

Or for the office, wear your jean jacket with a breezy, sleeveless tank, dark trousers and loafers.

Pair a fitted, sleeveless dress with a denim jacket and closed-toe mules.

Layering a summery top with a vest or jacket in olive green and pairing with dark denim or white denim is another one of my favorite transition solutions. I searched for the perfect jacket and vest to add to my wardrobe two years ago and I've gotten tons of use out of both. The color and the weight of each are contributing factors to perfecting the transitional look.

Do you have similar pieces in your closet? Season-proof your wardrobe by checking out what you already own and seeing how you can style it for fall. If you're missing a few of the key pieces I mentioned, make a streamlined shopping list and search online options or take it with you when you head to a department store or local boutique.

Now, I want to hear, are you Team All-Things-Summer or Team All-Things-Fall? Happy August, everyone!
